My Chosen Charities

I believe that these two charities are leaders in their fields in Canada and I know they could use, and would greatly appreciate, your support.  Their programs and information have made a real impact on me personally - Darcy

Image_edited_edited.jpg

Unsinkable specializes in using story telling - stories from fellow Canadians - to help de-stigmatize mental health issues, show examples of resilience, reduce shame and embarrassment, and generally, to show with real life examples that it's ok to need help, it's ok to get help, and there's hope when you get help.  Founded by former olympian Silken Laumann, they really helped me understand that - I wasn't bad... I wasn't un-fixable...and that mental health problems can happen to anyone.

The Centre for Suicide Prevention, operated as a subsidiary of CMHA Alberta, has what I consider numerous informative and helpful materials and programs on the issue of suicide awareness and suicide prevention.  Something to be proud of for all Canadians interested in mental health, they maintain and curate what's considered the largest English - language research base/library on suicide.

I find their library of materials - accessible to all - on their website a must-read for anyone who themselves, or have a family member, struggling with anything to do with the topic of suicide.

Welcome to Paddle Forward, Where Adventure Meets Purpose

Do you, or does somebody you care about, suffer from depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, suicide idealation, or some other form of mental illness?  1 in 5  adults do.

Find out more here about Paddle Forward's 2025 summer kayak trip fundraiser for mental health charities! Let's work together to help stop the suffering.

This epic adventure trip will cover over 725 km on the historic, scenic, and ecologically important Columbia River - taking 3 weeks to complete.

Donate, support, engage, and follow along! You'll be able to track the journey progress via satellite the entire way!

Along the way, I'll share the story of my own battles with mental health - of causes and triggers, of resilience, lessons learned (often the hard way) and of the power of nature to help in healing. I don't have all the answers, and I'm not a therapist. I'm just an ordinary guy wanting to help others have an easier journey than the one I've gone through personally. Nobody should go through these challenges alone.

About Me...and Why I Started Paddle Forward and the Fundraiser

I'm Just An Ordinary Guy, Suffering From Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, and from time to time, Suicide Idealation.

So Why Would I Put Myself Out There and Tell My Story? Because I'm Proof that Mental Health Challenges Can Happen to Anyone. I want everyone facing these challenges to be able to get help.  So here goes...

Hello! My name is Darcy Kindred, and I'm the Founder of Paddle Forward. Welcome to my site! The site as it now stands is just an introduction as to what's to come...watch for much, much more as we approach the start of the Fundraiser.

My goal is to encourage people with mental health problems to understand it is OK to get help and to understand that they are not alone, and that there are others out there who understand and share their struggles, and others out there who want to help.

I myself suffer from depression, generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD, and from time to time, suicide idealation.  I've been incredibly fortunate to have had incredible support  at home with my struggles.  I hate thinking about anyone having to struggle through these or other issues alone.

I’m in my mid-50's.  I grew up in a household of very modest means.  I’ve gone through a number of life traumas, ranging from bad relationships, relationship abuse, to parental alienation, to nearly being broke and on the street, to having my best friend commit suicide, to extreme work stress, to working in a highly toxic work environment.  I’m a biological father of two, now grown up, and a step-dad to three.  I’ve tried to play by the “rule book” of life – emphasizing career and kids most of my life and not taking enough time to myself.  My mental health took a significant decline about two and a half years ago. I planned out my suicide.  I just wanted the pain to end.  It was unbearable.  My wife became aware of my plans and intervened. It’s a long story, but without her support, I wouldn’t be here to tell this tale.  I feel guilt and shame for everything I’ve put her through.  She's an amazing person who didn't deserve to carry the weight of my struggles.

I’m an example that mental health struggles can happen to anyone.  I’m educated – a B.Comm.(Hons.) and an MBA.  I’ve had career successes (and failures). My resume reads like a business school graduate’s dream - I’ve done deals big and small, in Canada and internationally.  I was the family man – the dad that took his kids to enjoy the outdoors, coached all their sports – football, soccer, softball, baseball, and more.  I love the outdoors. I play a mean game of golf, self taught. I’m fortunate to be good at most sports I try. I’ve played a few musical instruments, one at a high level.  I’m capable at handy things – I’ve renovated houses and cottages on my own.  I’ve been both extremely fit and also overweight at various points in my life.  I’ve been bullied, and I’ve dished it back at some points too.

Now…I want to do what I can to change things. I want to advocate for more awareness of mental health supports. I want to encourage discussion about mental health issues. I want people who think toxic workplaces are ok, or who feel they have a right to treat others badly, to have to change. I want people who are suffering to know they are not alone. I want them to feel ok with getting help, not to feel embarrassed about it.  I want to inspire hope. I want people who don’t suffer from such problems to have more compassion and empathy for those who do. I want everyone to understand…about mental health problems…it can happen to anyone…and suffering in silence doesn’t help, and that those of us who have mental health problems, we didn’t get them because we wanted them. Just sometimes it's just hard to handle life and things build up.

Finally...I want to emphasize...the world needs more kindness. If you can take any inspiration from my story...let it be that...be kind to those you know, and if you can, those you don't.

The Journey Route - of Interest to Outdoor Adventure Lovers and Those With Mental Health Challenges Alike!

Columbia River Route.jpg

The Columbia River is a formidable route, to symbolize the challenges faced by those struggling with their mental health.

The daily struggles of battling depression, anxiety, ADHD, suicide ideation, and more, like this river, bring unexpected challenges at every turn. The shifting currents, unpredictable weather, and long stretches of remote wilderness provide a backdrop that mirrors mental health struggles.

The journey length symbolizes that there is no quick fix, to these problems for those who suffer, but rather, it's a daily struggle requiring perseverance.

Join me as I "Paddle Forward" with my own struggles, battling the depression, anxiety, and ADHD in my head, while I battle the unpredictability of this river.

Paddle Forward with me as I focus on a brighter future for all who struggle - one paddle stroke at a time.  Together, we can make a difference.

Why Raising Funds for Mental Health in Canada is Important

1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year.

Many people suffer in silence, afraid of the stigma associated with mental health problems and illnesses. I admit I did.

Chances are you know somehow who is struggling - these are your friends, your family, your neighbours.

Its time to:

  • Be kind - lets stop admiring and imitating those who aren't

  • Encourage victims to stop suffering in silence and get help

  • Create an atmosphere of empathy and understanding

  • Destigmatize mental health challenges

  • Help a neighbour, family member, or work colleague

  • Stop suffering in silence, learn the value of opening up

  • Explore more ways to manage the challenges of everyday living in our increasingly complex and fast-paced society

Join the fight against mental illness.  Follow the Fundraiser. Donate. Talk and share stories.

COMING SOON - BLOGS AND VLOGS ON MENTAL HEALTH TOPICS

Explore Outside, Heal Inside

Spending Time in Nature Has Been Scientifically Proven to Aid Mental Health

Paddle Forward: Explore Outside, Heal Inside is committed to empowering mental wellness and embracing the restorative benefits of nature.

Our mission is to curate informative and uplifting blogs, share personal stories, and share resources on mental health topics such as depression, generalized anxiety, ADHD, and suicide ideation.

Our blogs and vlogs will consist of original content, frankly discussing these topics in a "raw", no-holds barred, way unlike any existing YouTube or social media channel.  The goal is to help those experiencing mental health challenges understand that they are not alone, and that there is hope.

It's not an easy journey to recovery - its one that involves a combination of support, counselling, medication, understanding yourself, changing your priorities in life, and changing lifestyle.

We strive to create a welcoming space for individuals navigating mental health challenges and provide compassion and guidance to both individuals and their support networks.

Ways to Participate in the Fundraiser

There's lots of ways to participate and help me and Canadians with mental health challenges paddle forward!  Among the ways to participate are:

  • Pledge to donate, personally, or through your business.  Tax receipts will be provided

  • Watch me pass through one of the communities on the Columbia River in June!

  • Donate gear - there's still some odds and ends I could use!

  • Share stories - share stories that we can publish (we will anonymize as you wish) to let others know that they're not alone and share how you got help and what worked for you

  • Educate yourself to better help others - read our blogs and watch our future vlogs. Learn what suffering from a mental health disorder is really like - in plain speak

  • If you don't feel you can do any of the above, that is ok - not everyone has money, gear, or stories. But...everyone can be kind.  So do an act of kindness - and by the way we'd love if you'd share that with us too!
